(30 min CLASS) Samhain Lore, Reflection, & Spell w/ Erin Anderson-Kipp
MODULE 1: SAMHAIN LORE & ALTAR CORRESPONDENCES
The approach of Samhain (i.e., the Witches’ New Year) on Oct. 31 offers a marvelous opportunity for tuning in to how magickal we are. I like to think of us as Threshold Beings—situated at the intersection of Body and Spirit, as well as Past and Future (in a state we call “the present” and/or “presence”).
Learn how Celtic cultures celebrated Samhain more than 2,000 years ago, and how you can flow some Samhain magick of your own!
Symbols:
Colors: bright oranges, reds, golds
Foods: apples, acorns, nuts, pumpkin, pumpkin seeds, squash
Herbs: cinnamon, clove, sage, nettle
Animals cats, bats, owls, crows, stags
Gemstones: black obsidian, jasper, carnelian, onyx, smoky quartz, bloodstone
Scents: sandalwood, myrrh, patchouli
Misc: witches hats, brooms, candles, elements of fire
MODULE 2: SAMHAIN REFLECTION
During this time, the veil between this world and the Spirit world/other dimensions are said to be at their thinnest. We might ask, how our current struggles connect to the larger arch of what our ancestors dealt with? Are we continuing that struggle or are we moving through it? How can we contribute to the process of healing for our lineage and the community at large?
Tap into your authentic self and your capacity for resilience with this Samhain reflection and embodiment practice.
Reflection:
Who am I? What is true about me at my core?
How and where have I allowed myself to stray from my truth and my integrity? Where have I let myself get pulled away from who I really am?
How am I prepared to return to integrity? What am I willing to do to realign with myself?
What can I learn from my ancestors about the truth of who I really am? What can they learn from me?
What is my spiritual harvest this season? And what seeds am I planting this year on a spiritual level that I will harvest next year?
MODULE 3: RIBBON MAGIC SPELL FOR SAMHAIN
This spell is inspired by the community fires at the center of ancient Celtic Samhain celebrations. Try it with family and friends to bring warmth and joy to your hearth!
Spell
STEP 1: Gather 1 or more friends/family
STEP 2: Create a bouquet of ribbons (about 18 inches in length, flame-like colors), tie them into a loose knot
STEP 3: Mention significance of this bouquet of ribbons:
“this moment is about bringing the light and cheer of community and connection into our homes and lives as the darker months arrive”
STEP 4: Speak a dedication of few words over the bouquet
Example:
“"We are gathered here at Samhain to remember that we are all connected in one light, all of us on Earth, all who have come before, all who will come after, we have moved on from this plane. A flame burns in each of our hearts but there is one flame that we all share. These flames burn brightly and are represented by these ribbons. We bless these ribbons with warm, joy, and peace that sustains us and we carry them in our homes and into our lives. Each time we see our ribbon, we remember the power of this connection - the love & bond that we share. We are not alone, even with the darkness that winter brings. We are united in the light by the Source from which we all originate. Blessed be.”
STEP 5: Give each person in the group their ribbons and invite them to intuitively tie the ribbons around door knobs, light fixtures, sink faucets, etc. Each time they tie a ribbon, they say:
“I bless this (place where they are tying ribbon) as a portal of arrival and departure with the collective flame from this group. May the light from this shared flame only attract good energy and send good energy out into the world. Blessed be.”
