(20 min CLASS) The Connection Between our Brain, Body, & the Space Around Us w/ Ayla Wolf

 

Our relationship to our immediate surrounding environment depends in a large part on the functioning of the parietal lobe. Located within the parietal lobe, our somatosensory cortex is the link between our brain and our body.

Learn more about the mechanisms of spatial awareness, chronic pain, phantom limb pain and why things like yoga, dance and martial arts can change the way you view yourself in the world around you.

 

Different ways to to re-map the brain/body connection & tone the parietal lobe:

1 - Work with a partner & try the following activities with your eyes closed:

  • Have your partner place an object in your hand, see if you can identify what it is by feeling it

  • Ask your partner to draw letters on your hand, see if you can identify what letter it is.  Test left vs. right side

  • Have your partner touch different body parts, as each body part is touched moved your eyes (still closed) towards the body part they are touching & visualize that body part

2 - Any activity that asks you to navigate how the body is moving through space: 

  • Massage

  • Yoga

  • Dance

  • Martial arts

  • Twister (the game)

  • Puzzles

MEET YOUR TEACHER

Dr. Ayla Wolf DAOM is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine specializing in neurological disorders, chronic pain, and concussion recovery.  She is a faculty member of the Carrick Institute. She teaches courses for healthcare practitioners across the country on neurological exam techniques, functional neurology, dysautonomia, and concussion recovery, and has been a featured speaker in veterans groups on the topic of brain health.
