Sophia Bouwens
NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCHER, ACUPUNCTURE PRACTIONER
Sophia Bouwens is a Licensed Acupuncturist with a background in neuroscience, who specializes in supporting and optimizing the nervous system. Sophia attained her Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience from the University of St. Thomas in 2010. After studying the effects of acupuncture on pain perception, she got more curious about what acupuncture was doing to the body and went on to get her Masters of Acupuncture from Northwestern Health Sciences University in 2014.
Seven months after graduating with her Masters of Acupuncture, Sophia was hit by a drunk driver on her way home from work and sustained a Severe Diffuse Axonal Brain Injury - the second most severe type of brain injury. After waking from a six day, medically induced coma, Sophia began using acupuncture and the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine to help aid in her rehabilitation, and was out of the hospital quicker than any of her doctors anticipated - one month to the day!
Sophia has a passion to reach others to help them through their own neurologic challenges and live vibrantly. Combining her own experience with Traumatic Brain Injury with her knowledge of TCM and neuroscience and post-graduate work in Functional Neurology, Sophia currently practices in Stillwater at Healing Response Acupuncture & Functional Neurology. A mother of three, she is ambitious, fun-loving and brain-loving.
