Maya Elena

YOGA INSTRUCTOR, SINGER/SONGWRITER, ARTIST

To Maya,  the Niyama; Svadhyaya (self-inquiry) is, in essence, songwriting. Music is an expression of the spirit, conceptualized by the mind, and expressed through the body - similar to yoga. Perhaps the state of creative flow is similar to if not of the same essence as mediative transcendence. Growing up, Maya played everything from the accordion, piano, violin & viola, bass, guitar, djembae, singing in choirs, in musical theater,  to folk ensembles, and noisy  rock bands.

She was fortunate to attend Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, MN, and at 16 began studying more in depth; music theory, ear training, world music, and music production. She recently began producing her own music in efforts to create a single channel of creativity, from song’s conception, creation, to actualization. Currently, she’s finding creative ways to  incorporate mantras & Kirtan chants into a modern context that are lovely to sing along to and harmonize with!

Studying 200 hours of Hatha yoga at Soul of Yoga in Encinitas, CA was amazing, but Maya felt she needed more...during 2020 she will be undergoing another 300 hours of yoga teacher training. She will be specializing in Yin Yoga (taught by Joe Barnett), Pranayama (with Richard Miller, PHD), Trauma Informed Yoga (Laura Finerman), Yoga of Recovery (Durga Leela) and Ayurveda (Mas Vidal). She loves holding space for artists, musicians, and creatives - customizing a practice tailored to body wear-and-tear that comes from repetitive movements such as playing a guitar or painting. Her goal is to become an IAYT Yoga Therapist, to best serve various communities she is involved with!
